SACRE

Your SACRE needs you!

Across the diocese, there are nine SACREs - Oxfordshire, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Slough, Bracknell Forest, Reading, West Berkshire, Wokingham and Windsor & Maidenhead.

SACRE stands for Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education. Each SACRE is made up of four different groups including a multifaith group, a Church of England group, a teacher representatives’ group and a group which represents the local authority.

SACREs are statutory bodies, although the representatives are voluntary. Their work focuses on what is happening in schools with regards to RE teaching and collective worship. They usually meet three times every academic year and these meetings are often hybrid. You don't need any specific skills, just a willingness to give your opinion to ensure that children across the diocese get the best that a SACRE can offer. It helps if you are based in the area where the SACRE takes place, as knowledge of your community is helpful in determining local policy decisions. You may also have the opportunity to enrich your own life, as you meet with those from a range of religious and worldview communities.

It is part of the role of the ODBE RE adviser to ensure that there is sufficient Church of England representation on each SACRE and at the moment, we are looking for volunteers across the diocese.

If you are interested in supporting this vital work, do please book a quick conversation with Katie Dickens or email katie.dickens@oxford.anglican.org.

Thank you!
